Tips for Step Ladder Safety

Step ladders are more than handy – they help with innumerable tasks, from painting to cleaning and everything in between.  However, it is important that you understand how to use your step ladder safely.  Incorrect use can cause serious injury, so you need to make sure that you do it right.  Step ladder safety actually starts before you ever get on one – it starts with the decision to purchase one.

Finding the right step ladder might sound like a simple thing, but there are a few things that you need to consider to ensure that you are safe while using one.  First, how tall does the ladder need to be?  Will you be using it indoors or outdoors?  This is an important distinction.  A step ladder for indoor use can be made of wood, and might only be a couple of steps high.  However, an outdoor step ladder should be made of aluminum, and might be ten feet in height.

You also need to make sure that the step ladder that you choose has the right safety features.  For instance, you should opt for a ladder that has grip tape or paint on each step.  This gives you better purchase on each step, and helps prevents slipping and falling.  Grip tape or grit paint should be placed on both a wooden step ladder or an aluminum one.

Finally, make sure that the ladder is light enough that you can carry it by yourself.  A cumbersome step ladder that cannot be carried easily by one person is not a good investment.
