When winter arrives, it’s best to review some guidelines for keeping your water pipe system safe in below-freezing temperatures. The failure to winterize your house can result in some expensive mishaps. The primary threat here is caring for your water pipes, which can become frozen and then crack in the winter season.
The first concern is in proper installation and house construction. If the winter is particularly cold, keep an oil-based space heater in your kitchen near the water pipes. This should be set on low, in order to prevent pipes from freezing. Do not use portable electric fans anywhere near water pipers, and be sure to keep all wires away from any potential drips.
Don’t simply concern yourself with sink pipes. Give attention to pipes in garages, attics and basement areas, which are prone to freezing temperatures. Buying pipe insulation, which is fitted around your pipes, can help tremendously. Electric heating tape can also help with temperature control.
When temperatures are at a freezing level, keep the water moving in your pipes. Leave several faucets on with a small flow, above drip level. Constantly moving water will prevent sections of the pipes from freezing, and will protect the primary pipe unit. If you cannot do this, or have no means of insulation, turn off water to certain areas of the house. Follow this up by emptying out the water pipes (with an air blower to prevent freezing and cracking.
The winter season can be problematic for some homeowners. However, if you have good pipe insulation and are able to keep the water moving then winterization will be an easy process.
