How to Pick the Right Outdoor Cat Enclosure

A cat naturally enjoys being outdoors, despite the fact that many cat owners prefer to keep their pet indoors due to concerns over their safety.  If you live near a busy road, have neighbors with big aggressive dogs, or have local wildlife that would happily have your precious kitty as a snack such as raccoons or coyotes, you may feel you have no other option than to keep kitty cooped up indoors.  Even if you put up the tallest fence or wall, your cat’s climbing skill makes it nearly impossible to keep them in.

An outdoor cat enclosure is a safe and easy way of allowing your pet to enjoy the outdoors.  You can buy these from most pet stores, or try looking online for specialty pet cage builders.

Depending on your specific needs and the size of your yard, there are several options that will allow your cat to be safe and happy.  Cat tents are a common type of enclosure used by many pet owners.  They’re portable and easy to use without taking up a lot of space.  They are great for apartments and small spaces without much yard space.  Cat tents can easily be used on a patio as a way to allow for outdoor enjoyment even without a yard.

Netted outdoor cat enclosures are another popular option.  They are easy to set up, like tents, but are more of a permanent fixture.  Because they are slightly larger than the tent, netted enclosures will require a larger set-up space, with grass to secure the stakes at the bottom of the enclosure.

More expensive and complex cat enclosures include multi-level enclosures and wall-hugging enclosures.  The multi-level option is a more creative option that will allow the cat to explore a bit more.  Wall hugging feline cages are great for providing easy access to the outdoor area, whilst providing complete independence for your cat by letting them go in and out of the cat enclosure through a regular cat flap.
