Top 10 Commandments Men Should Follow While Dating

In today’s day and age, it’s difficult to find a true gentleman.  Men should adhere to a certain code of conduct when dating. So, if you’re on a singles dating website, looking for the right match, you need to know these ten commandments of dating.

The first commandment is that you should always make sure that you are on time for the date, and never cancel a date more than once.  The same goes for phone calls.  Don’t make your new woman wait more than a day between calls, and always apologize if you don’t call or text when you say you were going to.

The second commandment is that it’s important to always pay for your date at the romantic restaurant, and to never expect her to foot the bill.  This looks downright cheesy and cheep.  If she’s super-cool, then on the second or third date, it’s acceptable to start splitting the bill or taking turns to pay.  Do not request that she does this unless she suggests it first.  If you are on your tenth date, however, and you’ve been footing the bill the whole way, then (and only then) is it acceptable to request that she chips in.

The third commandment is that you should always practice chivalry by opening your lady’s car door, and doors to restaurants and buildings. You don’t have to go so far as pulling her seat out for her when she sits down or draping your jacket over puddles, but barging through a door ahead of her and letting it bounce back in her face was, and still is, the biggest insult you can throw at a lady.

The fourth commandment is that you should keep your alcohol intake to a minimum.  Two drinks are enough.  You don’t want to be drunk and stumbling on your date, or even have to worry about being pulled over by the cops on your drive home.  Mouthing the words, “So I’ll call you Thursday?” as the cops slam the cell door in your face is not a great way to end a date by any means.

The fifth commandment is that you should not talk/ gossip/ grumble about your ex-girlfriends when you are on a date with a new lady.  First date is an absolute no-no.  When it gets to the tenth date you have permission to open up a little – but not as much as you probably want to.  She does not want to hear about your past relationship problems, full stop.  Once she knows all about what your ex-girlfriend thought of your flaws, she will always be on the lookout for them herself!

The sixth commandment is that you shouldn’t brag about yourself.  Talking generally about your work, school or accomplishments is OK, but there is a fine line between sharing your life, and bragging about it.  If you get home and you realize that you know nothing about her and that her only contributions to the conversation that night were “Uh-huh,” “Really?” and “Yup”, you may have over-done the self-promotion.

The seventh commandment is that you should always treat everyone around you with respect while your lady is present.  This includes your waiters, the cashier and anyone else that you interact with.  Nothing turns a woman off quicker than seeing you haranguing the waiter because your food was cold, or calling the bus-boy a derogatory name just because he clears tables for a living.  That shows a lack of respect for other people, and a large streak of snobbishness.  Don’t make racist or sexist jokes under any circumstances, even if you are trying to be sarcastic or ironic.

The eighth commandment is that you should never discuss money and your financial situation.  It puts an odd strain on any developing relationship.  If you drive the latest BMW X6 and she still takes the bus to work, don’t rub it in her face or talk pompously about “helping her out.”  If she’s a keeper then she won’t want your money or your sympathy, she wants someone who will treat her as an equal, no matter what her finances are.

The ninth commandment is that you should listen to her and respect her opinions, even when they differ from your own.  You don’t have to agree, but you don’t have to be a jerk either.  Try to see her opinion, and respect any views that she voices rather than automatically dismissing them.

The tenth commandment is to respect the woman you are with and never be forceful physically.  Wait until she’s ready to kiss, and never touch her inappropriately or pressure her into doing something she may not be ready for.  Acting like a gentleman will win her respect and trust much quicker than trying to rush things along.

Finding your right match on a singles dating website might sound like a tricky job. But when you do, you can always ensure keeping the bond stronger. So, keep these ten commandments of dating handy to know what you should do and what should be kept at bay!
