How to be Single (and Enjoy it!)

Being single is an under-appreciated time in your life. Take it from someone who is currently in a relationship, and knows the darker side of the force.

Although most of us want to be with another person and long for coupledom, it doesn’t mean we should dread being single. People often correlate single with being alone. This is far from the truth. If you are unhappy as a single person, getting into a relationship will not fix your problems. However, if you want to take advantage of everything the single life has to offer, here’s how.

Let Freedom Ring

When you are single, you are free to make decisions on your own. There is incredible freedom that comes with this level of independence. If you are single, take advantage of this liberty by taking a trip or staying out all night. Wake up in the morning on a beach in Tijuana and you don’t have to justify your actions to anyone, except your conscience.

Make New Friends and Keep the Old

Anyone in a long-term relationship knows that eventually, you start losing touch with your old friends. Asking to hang out with the guys to watch a game can turn into a two-hour argument about how you never clean the house. When you’re single, appreciate the fact that you can spend time with your friends without thinking twice or asking for permission.

Spend Your Energy (and Money!) on YOU

Being single is positive because it means you only have to take care of yourself. Relationships, on the other hand, come with a lot of self-sacrifice.  Balancing financial statements, cleaning up after one another (physically and emotionally), sharing transportation etc all take their toll on your energy and emotions. The decisions you make while in a relationship are also held accountable by your partner.

Being in a relationship also comes with a lot of responsibility. Although you can have independence, a lot of your decisions have to be made based on both yourself and your partner. From finances to vacations, you need to consider your other half or at least check in with them, which can greatly limit your independence.

As a single person, you are the only one accountable for your actions. make the most of this freedom while it lasts!

More Time

Having a relationship takes time. When you are single, you can devote more time at school, work, or for personal hobbies. Statistically, people that get married later in life have much lower divorce rates than those that get together at a young age. When you take the time to get an education or establish your career and finances, you can enter a relationship with a much more mature state of mind.

While you are single, take advantage of the freedom you have. Take a trip to an exotic location, get a new hobby, hone your talents, hang out with friends, take a pottery class, spend your money for yourself, go out to a bar, flirt with the opposite sex, and just enjoy your life.

In short, the best way to enjoy being single is to first be happy with who you are. Your identity should not be based on anyone else and who you have or haven’t go, and once you discover that, you can enjoy being single a whole lot more.
