How to Pay Less Real Estate Commission

Are you looking to sell your home but feel that most realtors charge far too much when it comes to commissions?  The great news is that there is something that you can do about it.  The world of real estate is not what it was even a decade ago, and today a majority of buyers are looking to make their real estate purchases online, making it much easier for sellers to work to lower their commissions significantly.

Consider Marketing Yourself

One thing you may wish to consider is selling your own real estate.  Listing through the MLS in your area is fantastic, and you will find that there are numerous websites that you can advertise on for little to no cost, in addition to newspaper ads and even open houses.

When you use as many avenues as possible to advertise your home, you can be met with incredible success in your quest to sell your home without paying a significant sum in terms of commissions.

Choose the Right Real Estate Agent

While you may think that selecting a so-called discount real estate broker can save you money, you might be surprised to learn that this is the wrong choice.  In fact, many of these brokers actually charge higher than average when it comes to commissions on home sales.

Instead, realize that a highly reputable real estate agent will likely charge about the same as a less reputable agent.  They know that they can sell a good property quickly and get a fast turnaround, meaning less work for them and the same amount of money that other agents would have to work twice as long to earn.

Never Hesitate to Negotiate

You should certainly know that negotiation is always an option when it comes to real estate commissions.  It is illegal for a real estate agent to tell you that rates are set by the government.  Even though many companies do in fact set their own standard rates, you will find that many agents are both willing and able to negotiate.

If you threaten to go elsewhere and you have a great property, you may be able to get a substantial discount.  The key, however, is to keep your expectations realistic, and remember that you will ultimately get what you pay for.

Shop Around Before Making a Choice

The last and possibly most important piece of advice to anyone looking to lower real estate commissions is this: shop around.  Speak with a number of agents before making a commitment and look at not only how much they intend to charge, but what their overall marketing plan is.  Paying less for someone who will put minimal effort into selling your home is never going to be your best bet.

When you find a great agent, whether online or in person, you will find that you can pay considerably less overall while selling your home faster than you ever would with a discount or poorly experienced agent.
