How to Avoid Jet Lag

Jet lag is an incredibly common symptom among people traveling long distances.  Hallmarked by irritability, disorientation, headaches, cold-like symptoms, stomach problems, and fatigue, it can be a real problem for frequent travelers. 

While it is recommended to give yourself a day to recover for every hour in time difference on your trip, this can mean losing most of your vacation just trying to recover.  The good news is that a few simple tricks can help limit the effects of jet lag on your body without having to pop sleeping pills from the doctor.


Rest Up

 

One thing you should certainly take into consideration is how you treat your body before you even leave home.  Don’t drink alcohol for a few days before leaving, sleep well the night before your flight, and eat well before you get on the plane.  Exercising before you leave can also be very effective.


Avoid Stimulants

 

Avoiding caffeine and alcohol during the flight can also help combat jet lag.  Stand up and walk around the plane every hour and work to ensure that you keep your blood flowing freely.


Use Light Therapy

 

Light therapy is also helpful for many, as it is the loss of your usual daylight hours that contributes greatly to the condition. You can even consider taking melatonin to help fight jet lag by using it to help regulate it. You can get melatonin from any good drugstore.

There is much that you can do to help keep jet lag at bay.  By taking the right precautions and actions before, during, and after your flight, you can help keep your symptoms to a minimum.
