How to Restore a Wooden Table in a Few Simple Steps

For many people, restoring old furniture is a fun hobby and can be a great way to save money on buying new furniture. If you want to restore a wooden table, you’ll need to have some sandpaper, mild liquid soap, polyurethane, wood stain, and a medium paint brush before you get started.

First, sand down the wooden table with a course-grit sandpaper to remove the old lacquer. Once you’re done and you’re back to the bare wood, sand the wooden table with a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface and make any imperfections or dents less visible.  You’ll then want to wipe down the wooden table with a wet rag and a small amount of liquid soap.  That will remove any dust left over from the sandpaper.

Once the table has dried, you can move on to the application of the stain.  Using the paint brush, apply the stain evenly and in the direction of the wood grain.  Make sure it is spread evenly. Once you’ve applied stain to the entire surface of the wooden table, you should wipe off any excess stain and let the table dry for up to one full day.  You can apply more stain to the wooden table once the first coat has dried until it reaches the desired color.

Now it’s time to apply the polyurethane sealant to the entire wooden table in order to seal the wood stain.  Using a paint brush, apply the polyurethane to the wooden table in the same fashion as the wood stain.  The polyurethane should dry for four to six hours and then you’ll apply a second coat to the wooden table.  Now, your table should be restored and beautiful as the day you bought it.
