How to Find Out if There is a Registered Sex Offender Living Near You

These days, there are a lot of precautions that you have to take when you are considering moving into a new neighborhood.  One of those precautions is checking to see if there might be a registered sex offender living in the area you’re considering moving to, especially when you have young children.

Although finding lists of sex offenders living in your area can be challenging, there are plenty of tools out there to help you.  The first thing that you should do is to search local websites, such as Family Watchdog, which has a sex offender list available.  These sites are usually kept well up to date, and even provide pictures so that you know who to watch out for.

Another way to see if there is a sex offender in your area is by contacting your state’s FBI office, if they do not provide you with an online database.  There are currently 16 states which do not list sex offenders on the web, so this may be a wise next step.

Furthermore, you should also educate yourself on the laws that relate to sex offenders.  Remember that not all registered sex offenders have committed offenses that relate to young children.  Sex crimes can include everything from violating a local sex law within a relationship or marriage, to incest, to being caught selling or trading pornography, so do your research before you pack up and move out.

The Klaaskids Foundation’s website will give you plenty of information on the exact laws that deal with sex crimes against minors.  You will also find tips and suggestions for keeping your child safe from a sex offender who might be living near you.

Lastly, you can sign up for consistent electronic updates.  By doing so, any online websites with information about sex offenders will get in touch with you by email or text message if a registered sex offender moves into your neighborhood.
