Hot Exercise Tips: How Effective is Walking During Winter?

When the cold weather of winter sets in, most people become more sedentary, preferring to stay inside where it is warm.  However, there are numerous benefits to be found with outdoor exercise during the winter.  Walking during the winter is one of the best options to stay healthy instead of going into hibernation or slogging away in the stale air of the gym.

First, walking outdoors during the winter gives you more fresh air.  The crisp, cold air helps you burn more calories and can help clear your head, give your body more oxygen and help to eliminate headaches or stress.

Another benefit to walking outside during cool weather is that it can help keep your bones strong, and still give you a needed dose of vitamin D.  The body cannot process vitamin D without exposure to the sun, so this will help your body remain healthier and fight off those wintertime colds more easily.

Walking outdoors during the winter won’t necessarily burn more calories than taking the same route during the summer, unless it is very cold or if you walk in the snow.  Walking, snowshoeing, or even tromping through the drifts, can help you burn more calories and fat than taking a leisurely summer stroll.

Finally, walking during the wintertime will help you improve your mood and battle depression, anxiety and other emotional problems.  Being outside and being exposed to sunlight, particularly during the darker winter months, will help keep your mood up and stable.
