Is an Elliptical or a Treadmill Machine Better for You?

When it comes to getting a great cardio workout, there are two machines that people tend to go for- the treadmill and the elliptical.  This can be great when you are going to the gym, but what if you are looking to purchase a single machine for your home?  Should you go for the intense training that a treadmill provides, or should you consider spending your money on a low-impact elliptical?

Both machines certainly have their benefits.  The elliptical is a no-impact machine, which means that your knees and other joints aren’t absorbing shock like they do when you work out on a treadmill.  The elliptical also provides excellent cardio exercise and may even have separate arm bars to allow you to get your upper body in on the workout.  For a great cardio workout, the elliptical is definitely tops, especially for those with joint problems.

On the other hand, if you are looking to prepare for a marathon or would like to start long distance running, you may wish to consider a treadmill.  Treadmills offer higher impact workouts, which can be tough on the joints, but they are also perfect for people who love to run or race and require more realistic training.  With a treadmill, you can keep your running up even during the colder winter months, which is certainly a plus in many snow-prone areas of the country.

Whether a treadmill or an elliptical is better for you depends on a number of factors, but the bottom line is that both are remarkably excellent fitness machines. Either way, your purchase will be a great investment in your future health.
