Home Repair: How to Install Track Lighting

DIY home repair projects are a great way to improve the look and function of your home without busting your budget.  There are many excellent home repair projects that you can complete with relative ease.  Here is how you can install track lighting to improve the look of your favorite room.

Whenever you are taking on a track lighting home repair project, the first thing you will want to do is to measure the room to ensure that you have selected the proper fixtures.  Next, turn off power to the room you are working on.  Always test the wires with a voltage tester to ensure that there is no power going to them, or you risk electrocution or at the very least a nasty shock. If you are in doubt about how to do this, it’s best to call in a professional electrician or handyman.

When this is done and the power is off, remove any existing light fixtures.  Connect the connector wires on the track lighting to the wires in your ceiling, including the ground wire, and put wire nuts over all connections.

The next step in your home repair project is to put your track lighting in place.  Slide the track into position and mark the holes where you need them.  Remove the fixture, drill your holes, and put the bolts and toggles into place on the tracks.  With this done, put the tracks into your newly drilled holes and allow the toggles to open up, securing the lights into place.

Now install the light heads and put your bulbs into place.  This should complete your home repair project, save for any cleaning up that you need to do.

Installing track lighting can be a surprisingly easy home repair project, and can give your room an entirely new look and feel with this elegant form of lighting.
