Fun Facts: the Largest Stadium in the World

Rungrado May Day Stadium is the largest sports stadium on the planet. It is situated in Pyongyang, North Korea. It is, therefore, off limits to most citizens of the world and certainly off limits to citizens of the US.

Rungrado Stadium is used for sporting events, including games by the North Korean national football team. It is also a frequent venue for events that pay tribute to the leader of this nation, Kim Jung Il, and to events that are far more political in nature than they are athletic. The stadium opened in 1989 and can hold 150,000 people.

Over 2 million square feet in size, this stadium is a source of national pride in North Korea. The events held at Rungrado Stadium include the famous coordinated crowd actions, where literally thousands of people flip signs en mass to create pictures, patriotic slogans and to pay tribute to the North Korean government and its dictator.

Rungrado Stadium has been opened to foreigners on various occasions, but the events there are typically as closed off and inscrutable as is the nation itself. Parades and other patriotic events are frequently held at this stadium.

Rungrado Stadium is so large that the performers at various events and the participants in games sometimes number as many as 100,000. In some cases, the number of participants outnumbers the crowd. Rungrado Stadium is probably most famous for its mass games. A combination of patriotic events and various sports, they’re recognized as the largest such gatherings in the world.
