Tai Chi is a form of self defense whose origins date back to ancient China.  Once considered primarily one of the martial arts, it is now considered a form of exercise in the western world.

Tai Chi is incredibly beneficial for stress reduction and is even used to help treat a number of health conditions.  Promoting wellness and balance as well as fitness, there is certainly much to appreciate about the practice.

When looking at Tai Chi or considering Tai Chi classes, it is easy to see why it is so calming to the mind and body.  It is a noncompetitive form of exercise that makes use of very gentle stretches and physical movement.  Everything is designed to be done gracefully and elegantly, and the body remains in a constant state of motion.  There are hundreds of movements and positions in Tai Chi, and all utilize rhythmic patterns that help regulate breathing while keeping the body centered and calm.

One of the things that makes Tai Chi so popular is that virtually anyone can do it.  While those with severe osteoporosis may wish to consult a physician, the gentle flow of movement makes it well suited for people of all ages and abilities. Tai Chi offers as much fitness to the mind and soul as to the body, and it can help improve concentration and stress reduction as much as agility, and balance.

There are certainly many benefits to the practice of Tai Chi.  Whether you are looking to find an exercise that can improve your body or your mind, Tai Chi’s principles of balance and mind body wellness make it well suited for anyone.
