6 Amazing Fit Food Groups for a Younger You

From meats to vegetables, fruits and grains – there are millions of food choices at your nearby supermarket or corner store.  Of all these different items, is it even possible to choose the fittest one?  I say yes. Well, kind of. Let’s explore the different types of fit foods in order to find out which one will take the crown!
First, we need to establish criteria for fit, otherwise, any food choice would be appropriate.  Fit here will focus on a food that gives us energy, builds muscle, is low in fat and high in protein.  That knocks out anything processed or sugary.  Also, a lot of fruits and vegetables are healthy but don’t have much protein to build muscle.  However, there are a few that are good.

Fit vegetables
Let’s digress for a bit before we list fit vegetables. What exactly is a vegetable? I had a hard time answering this question and had to do a bit of culinary and biological research before I figured it out.

Technically a fruit is anything with seeds.  So yes, along with apples, peaches and pears, tomatoes, squash, and even peppers are biologically fruit.  However, in the culinary world, a vegetable is a broad term.  Tomatoes, squash, and peppers are all vegetables in a chef’s eyes as are mushrooms, onions, and other types of plants and fungi.  Typically, the culinary world categorizes fruits as sugary and fleshy plants.

Now that we know what vegetables are, let’s talk about ones that we would consider ‘fit’. Although I can’t stress enough the importance of eating any and all vegetables, we want to find out which ones provide energy and build muscles.

Some great ones that you can find at any Farmer’s Market are avocados, mushrooms, asparagus, corn, beans, spinach, onions, collard greens, broccoli, and sweet potatoes.  Of all these, the highest bang for your buck is… drumroll… beans!  Beans are a great source of carbohydrates and proteins, that will give you energy and build lots of muscle.  However, they are not the fittest food in the world.

Fit fruits
Fruits are amazing foods. They provide a great source of carbohydrates that leave you energized.  Also, the antioxidants and other great compounds in many fruits (especially darker ones) maintain a healthy body.

However, fruits are only part of the equation when it comes to being fit.  They have little protein or fats, which our body needs in moderation.  It is because of this that a fruit is not the number one fit food.  However, there are some great choices: blueberries and blackberries (or any berry for that manner), apricots, apples, bananas, cantaloupe, papayas, and acai berries.

Fit nuts
Actually, any fruit will improve your health and make you fit, so eat as many as you can! However, the fittest fruit is one that we often don’t think of as a fruit: the nut!

The top two nuts are Walnuts and Almonds.  Here is a list of some of their benefits: magnesium, calcium, antioxidants, vitamin E. These help reduce many cancers like colon and skin, improve bone strength, and keeps your brain sharp.  With so many benefits, nuts are one of the fittest foods around, but they still don’t top the fit list.

Fit meats
Ever since our caveman days, meat has been one of the most important staples of our diet.  Packed with protein, fats, and carbohydrates, it’s no wonder our ancestors ate mostly meat.  But not all meats are alike.  Have you ever wondered what the difference is between red and white meats?

Well, red meats are muscles used constantly by animals and have a lot of myoglobin in them.  White meats are muscles used for short, quick bursts of energy.  Think of a cow that stands around all day versus a chicken who flaps its wings quickly for a few seconds.  White meats tend to have less fat, so are healthier.

The healthiest meats are from poultry like chicken and turkey.  They are almost all protein with very little fat.  Consume these if you want to build lean muscles and lose some flab!

Fit fish
Let’s discuss the various types of seafood that we eat.  Seafood is a bodybuilder’s fit friend because, like chicken, it packs a huge amount of protein with very little fat.  Also, the fats found in most seafood are healthy omega 3’s.  Some of the fittest fishes include salmon, shrimp, scallops, halibut, pollock, cod, and best of all—tuna.

Grilled, baked, even canned, tuna is a versatile fit seafood touted by the professional athletes all over the world.  However, with seafood, you do have to worry about mercury and cholesterol levels.  That is why fish is not our top fit food.  So what is the most fit food around?  The answer lies in the ground.

Fit grains
It’s surprising how little people know about grains. Try and name 10 types of grain in your head right now. I got rice, cereal, oats, and wheat until I gave up. These are the ones most people in the world eat, but they aren’t the most fit.

Here are a few more: buckwheat, rye, barley, bran, lentils, sorghum, teff, spelt, millet, and many more.  All of these are good for you, but which ones are the most fit and why?

The second most fit grain in the world is flax. This grain has high levels of fiber, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids. Some studies suggest they reduce the risk of both breast and prostate cancer.  Bodybuilders and grain enthusiasts alike support flax for amazing nutrition and health benefits.

The world’s #1 fit food is…
The number one fit grain, and the fittest food in the world is an uncommon (but becoming much more popular) South of the border plant: QUINOA.

Quinoa is the best grain out there.  It is a South American plant categorized as a semi cereal.   The great thing about this wonder plant is that it contains all 9 essential amino acids for humans.  Very few plants can claim this feat.  Also, it is a great source of fiber, magnesium, phosphorous, and iron.

It is so good that NASA is using it for astronauts that spend a long time in space.  Because of this, Quinoa is the most fit food in the world!

The take-home message is this – there are so many fit foods in the world that you have no excuse not to eat any!
