What is Social Online Shopping and How Does it Bring Your Community Together?

Shopping has long been a favorite pastime of people around the world, and with good reason.  Consumerism has always been popular, and at the end of the day, people like to buy and enjoy new things.  With the invention of online shopping, however, much of the social aspect of shopping has disappeared.  Gone are the days of talking with other customers about what products are best, and instead, we just click buttons.  Social shopping is designed to put that same sense of learning and wonder into online shopping.

Social shopping is really a simple premise.  There are numerous social shopping sites, including Groupon.com, iTwango.com, and SocialShopper.com, and each has different rewards and ways of encouraging business.  The premise of social shopping sites is to encourage groups of people to make certain purchases together to get a bulk or discounted rate, or to choose to shop at certain online stores together.  They even offer local coupons to get people in the area to check out new or existing businesses.

It’s basically the same principal as when you get a group of your friends together to buy a group or package vacation – you all get the same holiday as if you had booked separately, but by booking together, you each save money by getting a group deal. Social shopping sites such as Groupon work on the same principal, but they enable strangers to all book together on a variety of items, including spa days, cruises, vacations and meals or trips out to popular attractions, all located in their local area.

The idea of social shopping is certainly interesting, and the phenomenon has gained much attention from many major media outlets, including CNN and the Wall Street Journal.  Shopping has always been a social activity, and bringing this experience to the online world is certainly a difficult but worthwhile task.

While we may spend less time conversing with other store customers, social shopping sites are finding ways to bring back interaction and to help shoppers come together to explore and find great deals on the best goods online and in their hometowns.  With such a unique service coming into development, it will not be long before the notion of online shopping is changed forever.
