How To Clean Your Sneakers With Baking Soda

Smelly sneakers can be embarrassing at the best of times.  Even if you just showered, a pair of whiffy sneakers left in your room or car can be quite off-putting to guests and family members alike.  The good news, however, is that you can get rid of that stubborn smell with baking soda.

There are a number of ways that baking soda can help keep your shoes smelling great, and today we will look at just how you can do that.

In addition to sprinkling a small pinch of baking soda on your feet to help absorb excess moisture (do this before you put your socks on), you can also wash your sneakers in the substance.  After removing the inserts and laces, simply create a mixture of one part baking soda to three parts hot water.  Use the mixture to scrub the shoes inside and out, and let them soak in the mixture.  Next, stuff them with paper to absorb moisture, and allow them to dry in a warm place.

You can also put your wet sneakers inside a tied-up pillow case and put them on low heat in the tumble drier along with your clothes… make sure though that they don’t contain any foam rubber or this can create a fire hazard.  Never dry shoes in an empty tumble drier without adding other laundry, or your tumbling shoes may damage the drum.

When the shoes have dried, sprinkle baking soda inside them, using a generous amount, and shake them up to disperse it as much as possible.  Dump out any excess and you will find that your shoes are able to control both moisture and odors much better.

After washing the laces and inserts, cover the inserts with baking soda and replace them as well as your laces.  When this is done, simply use a damp cloth to clean any powder from the outside of the shoes.  Quick tip – wear white socks if you’ve just dusted your shoes with baking power, as the baking soda residue will show up on black or colored socks.

Baking soda is an incredibly effective and natural way to keep your shoes and sneakers smelling great on even the busiest days.  It can help control foot odor as well, helping to resolve the problem at the root.
