Are Refurbished Electronics as Good as New Electronics?

Buying used clothing is one thing, but buying used electronics is a bit more complicated. However, with a little homework, you may be able to get a great deal on an item that would have otherwise been unaffordable.

In some cases, refurbished items are better than new. Why? Most retailers test refurbished items thoroughly before reselling them, while new electronics are usually not tested at all. This translates to a steep discount for an item that’s in better-than-new condition.

There are a few caveats when shopping for used electronics. The reputation of the retailer is everything. Whether you’re shopping on eBay or any other online store, you have to feel confident that the seller will stand by the product. Also, look at the returns policy. If the electronics item doesn’t work and you have to send it back, you’ll be out the shipping cost.

Warranties are another must. New electronics come with valuable warranties, and you’ll want to buy from a reseller that offers some kind of manufacturer or extended warranty, as well.

Used laptops and televisions can be purchased at half the regular retail price – or even less, in some cases. If you get a warranty with it, what do you have to lose? New electronics are as overpriced as new cars, so it pays to opt for refurbished when the opportunity arises.
