How to Make Healthy Kids Meals

Getting picky toddlers and even picky teenagers to eat healthy meals can be quite the headache for the cook of the house.  You have to get creative if you are going to get anything nutritional into those tummies.  The following tips on making healthy meals fun for kids should come in handy.

Start by getting your kids involved with mealtime.  When dealing with older kids, explain the rules of healthy meals, but then let them pick out the meal for dinner.  Letting older children make decisions about what they eat will make them feel empowered and more prone to downing those healthy meals and cooperating.

When dealing with young kids, letting them stir the healthy meals or perhaps use cookie cutters to push out fun shapes when making wholemeal cookies or sandwiches.  Some kids may enjoy ripping up and washing the lettuce.  Getting to tell daddy that they “cooked dinner” is a wonderful joy and can also be a good stepping stone to getting children excited about healthy meals.

Healthy meals aren’t healthy without plenty of veggies.  Try pureeing them and adding them into “fun” foods.  An array of minced veggies can be hidden in things like spaghetti sauce and macaroni and cheese.  Even dessert can be healthier by doing things such as adding zucchini into brownies.

Another tip to make healthy meals more fun for little ones is simply to “dip it.”  Everyone loves foods that can be “dipped,” so get creative and come up with healthy veggies and dips such as tofu dip, plain yogurt, peanut or almond butter, or even 100% fruit jams.  You can also slice up fruits and veggies to make creative shapes such as faces or boats.

Follow these tips for fun healthy meals, and watch your pint-sized tot eat up those veggies and fruits!
