How to Prepare and Paint Your Basement Floor

When you are renovating your basement, you may want to paint your basement floor. Painting the basement floor can be much more cost effective than carpeting or adding other types of flooring, and if you use the right kind of paint, it will be much more hard-wearing. However, you need to make sure that you do the process correctly if you want your paint-job to last.

The first thing you need to do is prepare your basement floor. Take all items that you can move out of the basement and put them in another area. You then need to clean the basement floor. They get quite dirty and in addition to mopping the floor a few times, you will want to use a degreaser. You must also make sure that there is no excess moisture on the basement floor by drying it with a space-heater or an old towel or two.

When the floor is prepared, you will be able to begin painting. The types of paint you choose should be based on the way in which you plan to use your basement. Epoxy based paints work well, and you can add silica to create a nonskid basement floor. You can also choose paint with a high gloss finish. These floors will be much easier to clean, and are waterproof too.

Add several coats to make sure the paint lasts a long time if your basement is a high traffic area. The most post popular colors are gray and dark green, as these colors don;t show the dirt so much. Painting the basement floor to match the rest of the décor you plan to add to the basement is always a good idea.
