Is Mel Gibson’s Career Over?

Long after his 2006 DUI incident (in which he made anti-Semitic remarks and later apologized), Mel Gibson is in hot water again.

In July 2010, Mel Gibson was allegedly recorded making a phone call to ex-lover Oksana Grigorieva. In the recording, a voice sounding much like Mel Gibson uses racist terms and misogynistic language (he used the n-word and several crass sexual words in reference to Oksana).  Oksana filed a restraining order against Mel Gibson for domestic violence. He is not to approach Oksana or their daughter.

Evidence was not conclusive (and Mel Gibson’s ex-wife defended him, probably not too fond of Oksana), so the police investigation stalled. Later in the same month, Mel Gibson was allegedly heard again making a racial slur against Latinos. The recordings were enough for his agency William Morris Endeavor to dump him as a client.

Many civil rights activists have now stated that Mel Gibson and his movies should be boycotted because of Mad Max’s wacky behavior. Has Mel Gibson truly crossed the line? Sad to say, he wouldn’t be the first Hollywood celebrity to show racist or misogynistic viewpoints, nor will he be the last.

Mel Gibson’s fan base will truly be tested in the coming months.  Can they look past his personal drama (and his racist leanings) and forgive him?  Does his personal life even matter since he’s a movie star and not a politician?  One thing’s for certain: he probably won’t be making any films anytime soon.
