How to Remove Nail Polish From Your Carpet

It happens to many of us at some point.  You are painting your nails while trying to talk on the phone or pay attention to the kids, and then it happens.  You see the drop start to fall, but it is too late – wet, gooey nail polish has landed on your carpet.  Before you let the panic set in, know that it can be removed, but be prepared for what may be a tedious cleaning process.  Here are some tips on how to get nail polish out of carpet and other fabrics without having to call in a dry cleaner.

If you happen to have white carpet, you are ahead of the game.  Nail polish remover or bleach will work wonders for your stain with no worry that the dye will be removed from your carpet.  Dab some on with a liberally soaked cotton wool ball or scrap cloth, blot, repeat till all the varnish is removed, then leave to dry.

For others, however, it can be a bit more complicated.  Nail polish remover may still work, but it is absolutely essential that you test it in an inconspicuous area first to see how the remover will affect the color in your carpet.  Wait 24 hours before using it on the stain.

If nail polish remover isn’t right for your carpet, you can also use detergents while the drop of polish is still wet.  These will help to bind to the molecules in your nail polish so that it can be scrubbed away.  It is very important that you do not scrub the nail polish until it has dried on your carpet in order to keep the stain from spreading.  If you catch it while it is still wet, blot but don’t scrub, to lift away as much as possible, then use detergent and a scrub brush after it is dry.  With a little effort, your problem should be resolved.
