Should You Avoid Consuming MSG?

You have probably heard of MSG being in your favorite fast food burrito, or even a typical bowl of seemingly healthy pho.  MSG stands for monosodium glutamate, and it is used in food flavoring.  The USDA considers MSG to be safe, but a number of health industry professionals claim that it can cause a number of problems when ingested over the long term.

MSG contains no value when it comes to nutrition, and the only purpose it serves is to flavor food.  Today, we have many other options when it comes to flavoring your food, including more ancient methods such as using zero-calorie herbs and spices.

You might have even heard people say that they love Chinese food, but they are hungry again an hour later. Many Chinese fast food restaurants use MSG, and the excitotoxins in the MSG trigger the brain to eat more sooner.  It can also cause problems by encouraging the body to store excessive fat.

Unfortunately, there are a long list of side effects reported with ingesting MSG.  Many include include shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and numbness in the neck.  Thirst and dry mouth are reported as well.  The neurotoxins contained in MSG can have a damaging effect on the nervous system and the brain when eaten in high doses over a number of years.

While not everyone will have side effects, it is in your best interest to avoid MSG whenever possible. You will be much healthier for doing so.
