Learning How to Make Candied Yams for Your Thanksgiving Day Dinner

Candied yams are one of the most traditional of all the many different Thanksgiving dishes.  However, if you have never made these delightful treats before, you might find the concept a bit daunting.  With this easy recipe, you can make candied yams right, and ensure that your Thanksgiving dinner is complete this year.

To start, you will need some ingredients.  You’ll need five clean yams, two cups of water, one teaspoon of lemon juice, a quarter cup of firmly packed brown sugar, a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger root and two tablespoons of unsalted butter.

Begin by boiling the water in the bottom of a steamer set.  Put your Thanksgiving yams in the water, cover and continue boiling them.  You’ll need to steam your yams for about thirty minutes or so.  To test for doneness, pierce them with a fork.  If they pierce easily, they’re done.

Now, for Thanksgiving candied yams, you need to take the yams out of the water and set them aside.  Preheat your oven to three hundred and fifty degrees.  Over medium-low heat, you need to melt your butter.  When the butter is melted, add the brown sugar and dissolve it.  Add the ginger and let the mixture simmer for one minute.  Now, add the lemon juice and remove the mixture from the stove.

For Thanksgiving candied yams, you will next need to butter a deep baking dish.  Peel your yams and slice them long-wise.  Put them flat in the baking dish and pour the butter mixture over the top of them.  Bake this for about fifteen minutes and serve warm.  You’ve now made candied yams for Thanksgiving – it’s a simple option that tastes great!
