Eating Fish: How to Know if You Have Mercury Poisoning

Eating fish is a good way to help ensure that you are healthy and fit because the omega-3 fatty acids offer numerous benefits.  However, fish can also be a threat to your health, and can contain mercury.  A great deal of fish contains mercury, even when purchased ‘fresh’ from a fish market, or even a restaurant.  Eating too much of the wrong kind of fish can put you at risk for mercury poisoning.  How can you tell if you are suffering from the condition?

Visual Impairment

One sign that you have mercury poisoning from fish is if you suffer from visual impairment, such as tunneling.  Unexplained hair loss and tremors in your limbs are also signs that the fish you have been eating is contaminated.

Memory Loss

Another sign can be frequent headaches and loss of memory.  If you suffer from numbness and tingling in your limbs or lips, then you might also be suffering from mercury poisoning.  If you are concerned about the health of a child, then you need to look for other signs of mercury poisoning that differ from adults.

Speech Impairment

Children might have reduced attention spans, or they might have short memories.  They can suffer from speech impairments, or problems with their vision.  If you notice these symptoms, it is important that you seek medical attention right away.

The best way to avoid mercury poisoning from fish is to eat the right types of fish.  There are some safe varieties out there, but even these should only be eaten twice per week at the most.  If you still want the benefits of eating fish without the dangers of mercury poisoning, then consider adding a fish oil supplement to your diet.
