What is the Best Time of Year to Buy a Home?

Those selling homes are often given the advice by their Realtor that the spring and early summer is the best time of year to put their homes on the market.  However, are these the best times for home buying?  Knowing when to buy can save you an enormous amount of money on that new home purchase in the long run.

If you simply want the biggest selection possible, follow the conventional wisdom about home buying and selling.  You will not find a larger selection of homes for sale than during late spring.  However, you will find a higher concentration of those looking to also buy a home – your competition.

If you want to cut out some of the competition, consider home buying on Easter Sunday.  This can be a very good option, as most people will not be making offers at this time.  However, make sure that you make an offer that very day – don’t wait.

Another good time of year for unconventional home buying is on Christmas Day.  Not only are there fewer buyers in the market, but real estate sellers are generally in better moods, as well.  Shop around for homes a few days beforehand, but make sure that you put in the actual offer on Christmas Day.  You might be quite surprised at how easy the process is, and what good deals you are able to get when home buying on this holiday.
