Does Choosing the Right Fishing Line Help Catch Bigger Fish?

Depending on what kind of fish you’re after, you’ll need to make sure you buy the right fishing line for the job. For instance, if you’re after large fish and you need to make sure that you don’t wind up with a broken line, you’ll want a superline.  If you’re fishing in clear water for smaller fish, you’ll want a monofilament.  The various fishing line choices out there offer different performance and will make or break your chances of landing that fish.

The most common fishing line around is monofilament.  This fishing line offers good performance, comes in a variety of pound test ratings and is suitable for beginners.  Heavier lines will improve your casts up to a point.  Lighter lines are harder for the fish to see in the water, but they tend not to cast as well.

Make sure the fishing line you choose is appropriate for your reel, as well.  You can try to substitute a different type of fishing line if you run into some common problems.  For instance, if you constantly break your fishing line, you may want to try one made out of fluorocarbon.   Monofilament lines tend to stretch a bit underwater, so you may want to switch to a stiffer type if you have problems getting your hook set.

It’s a good idea to discuss your options in fishing line with experienced anglers.  Though it might seem a bit obsessive to a newcomer, your fishing line really does make a difference in how much success you’ll have when you’re out there trying to land ‘The Big One.’
