How To Replace a Bathroom Faucet Without a Plumber

If you are handy around the house, you might not need to hire a plumber to replace that leaky or outdated bathroom faucet. Replacing a bathroom faucet is much easier than you might think. In fact, the hardest part will probably be choosing the design of the new faucet. Here are some tips that will help you when you start your replacement project.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that the mains water is off. Turn off the water supply valves. You can do this at the main  house valve or the valves beneath the sink. You then need to remove the old faucet. Loosen the tubes that go to the hot and cold water supply. You can do this easily with a basin wrench. You will then remove the nut that holds the faucet to the sink. Once that is done, the old bathroom faucet will come out easily.

Install your new bathroom faucet and use Teflon paste (or tape) on the end of the faucet stems. Wrap the tape tightly around the thread on the screw joint. Make sure it is wrapped around covering the whole thread 2 or 3 times, then cut it and smooth the end into the groove to make it lie flat.

Next, install the rubber gasket that came with your new bathroom faucet. Secure the nut that holds the faucet to the sink, connect the supply tubes to the bathroom faucet stems and add more of the Teflon paste. Attach the drain housing to the flange. Place the pop up drain into the sink and secure it with the control pin at the rear of the sink. Make sure everything is connected tightly and check for leaks.

Replacing the bathroom faucet only takes a couple of hours at the most. You will feel good that you were able to replace the bathroom faucet on your own, and best of all you can save some money.
