Home Improvement 101 How To lay Tile In Your Bathroom

Porcelain tiles are a nice addition to just about any bathroom, and if you are remodeling, then you might want to choose to lay tile on your own. It is easy to lay tile, and even those who are rookie do-it-yourselfers should be able to do it with very little trouble. Here are some simple guidelines that you can use to lay tile in your bathroom.

The first thing that you need to do is make sure that the subfloor is ready for you to lay your tile. The room in which you are placing the porcelain tile should be clean and dust free. If there is dirt or dust in the room, it can affect how well the mortar works, so make sure you vacuum first and wipe walls due to be tiled down with a damp cloth. Allow to dry before proceeding. .

Next, prepare your layout. Use a tape measure to find the exact center of the room. Always use chalk lines to draw the layout on the floor before you lay tile. This will give you a nice grid to work to and will avoid two common ‘DIY’ mistakes – laying tiles at a crooked angle and winding up with a half-tile space at one end. You’ll want to avoid having to cut your tiles, as this is a professional job and hard to do at home. Try to buy tiles that can be laid without leaving big gaps at the edges of the room if you can help it.

When you first lay tile, you do not want to use mortar. Make sure that the design works and the tiles fit first. Use spacers to get the tiles in the right place. If you have to cut tiles to go along the wall, measure the size and then cut them in another room or at your local DIY store.

After your dry run, you will then be able to go through and lay tile with the mortar. After you lay tile, make sure that you, your kids, and your pets stay out of the room for at least 24hrs. If you touch the tiles before that time, they may shift and all of your hard work would be ruined.
