Got Allergies? Start By Getting Rid of Dust Mites in Your Home

Dust mites are a big problem in many people’s homes. Those who have allergies will often find that the dust mites contribute to the problem and cause those allergies to worsen. Fortunately, you can do a few things that will help you to control the dust mite problem in your home.

Dust mites are tiny little insects that thrive on dead skin (yuck!). Since humans shed skin cells so often, every home has plenty for the creatures to eat. One of the best ways to control the dust mites is to clean often. You should clean your bedding at least once a week, whether or not it looks or feels dirty, as dust mites often live there. Washing all of the bedding in hot water is important, as the hot water will kill all dust mites present.

If you have carpeting in your home, realize that this is a haven for dust mites. You will need to vacuum often, and even then, you will probably not be able to get rid of all of them. Many people choose to tear out their carpeting and install hardwood flooring instead if they have bad allergies. Lower the temperature in your home as well. Instead of keeping the thermostat in the seventies, drop it to below seventy when you are not at home and switch your heating off at night if you live in a temperate climate. Dust mites prefer warm, humid places.

You should also go through your home and do a thorough dusting each week. Those with bad allergies may want to use a mask while they dust. You may also want to consider getting an air filter for some of the rooms in the house. If you have severe allergies to dust mites, the cost is well worth it.
