How To Clean Your Bed Pillows at Home and Save Money on the Dry Cleaner

No matter what type of pillow you have on your bed, whether it is made of foam or feathers, you will probably have to clean it at some point. The case for the pillow is easy enough to clean just by tossing it in with the laundry. The pillow itself is another matter, and you have to make sure that you treat each pillow differently depending on the material from which it is made.

A pillow filled with synthetic materials is able to be placed in the washing machine and dryer. Before you wash the pillow, make sure that you check for any holes in it. You don’t want the filling to come out in your washer or dryer. Use cold water when you wash them. Never dry any pillows filled with flammable foam in the drier. If you must use the tumble-drier, use it on a very low heat, or set the timer so you can remove the pillows from the drier before they are completely dry. Allow them to air-dry by hanging them outside or in your laundry room, and you’ll reduce the risk of a fire hazard.

With a foam pillow, you should wash it by hand with soap and water. Use lukewarm water, and if the pillows are big you can simply soak them in the bath.

With pillows full of down, you can either hand wash them, or take them to the dry cleaners. If you hand wash them, you can let them dry in the house – in an airing cupboard next to a heater if you have one. You do not want to put them in the sun to dry because they will develop a foul odor.

Taking the time to care for and clean each pillow means that you won’t have to incur the expense of taking them to the dry cleaner. You will also be able to prolong the life and use of the pillow so you do not have to buy more. Saving money is always great news!
