How To Remove Carpet Stains Without Spreading Them Around

Carpet stains can be very stubborn, depending on what is is that you’ve just spilled. Some of the ways that people try to remove them actually make the problem worse. If you spread the staining material over a wider area in an effort to remove it, for instance, you may end up with a large area of the carpet ruined. You can remove carpet stains effectively, but you have to use different techniques for different types of carpet stains.

For liquids, blotting is the best way to prevent carpet stains from spreading. Use a clean paper towel or an old towel to blot up excess liquid. Press firmly straight down instead of rubbing – ‘ never ‘scrub!’. Keep blotting until your paper towel comes up clean. Carpet stains caused by thick substances shouldn’t be blotted. Scoop up as much of the solid material as possible. Treat the stain beneath with spray-on stain remover for carpets, and let it sit and soak for the time stated on the bottle. Then blot with a paper towel as above.

For particularly resistant carpet stains, such as those caused by wine, ink or blood, you may want to purchase a specialty stain solvent. Make sure you do this as soon as possible, or better still, always ensure that you stock up in advance. Carpet stains that have already set into the fibers are almost impossible to remove. If you have a dried stain that you need to remove, remember to always work from the edges of a carpet stain toward the center. If you work in the other direction, or across the stain, you’ll simply be pushing any of the discoloration you remove from the carpet into neighboring fibers, thus spreading carpet stains over a wider area.
