Do Dairy Products Really Increase Weight Loss?

Weight loss is a common goal for many people around the nation these days as the obesity epidemic grows larger and more widespread.  There are hundreds, if not thousands of diet tips out there online and in women’s magazines to help people lose weight, but not all of them are effective.  Let’s examine the notion that an increase in dairy products in the diet can help with weight loss.

The premise behind dairy products causing weight loss is certainly one that makes many people stop and think.  After all, many milk based products are high in calories and fat.  With that in mind, however, you might be surprised to learn that many studies actually show that dairy can help people better meet their weight loss goals.

There are a number of theories behind this, with the prevailing one being that the added calcium seems to help prevent food cravings.  When the body has a calcium deficiency, you are more likely to crave calcium-rich (and fat-rich!) foods such as cheese and ice-cream until it is satiated.

When you take in dairy as part of your weight loss regimen, it is important to keep your daily caloric intake in mind as you head out to the grocery store.  The best dairy choices are those that are low in fat, such as those made with skim milk.  Better overall dietary choices are still essential, however, as any weight loss caused by consuming dairy only works as part of a balanced and nutritious diet.

Whenever you add the right dairy products to a healthy diet and exercise program, however, you will find that they really can leave you much healthier and slimmer overall.
