How to Make Homemade Crab Cakes

Crab cakes is a popular meal option all around the nation – you can add this dish to your family menu very easily.

The first thing to do is to gather your ingredients to prepare your crab cakes. You can use fresh or canned crab, but you’ll need a full pound after shelling the crab.  You also need half a stick of butter, half of a small onion, a teaspoon of kosher salt and two large eggs.  Add to that one and a half teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, a teaspoon of paprika, half a teaspoon of pepper, two tablespoons of tartar sauce and two slices of bread torn into small pieces.

Now, cook the onion and salt in the butter over medium high heat.  Soften the onion, but do not caramelize it.  You then need to whisk your eggs, then add your other ingredients together and add the onion as well.  Fold the crab into the mixture gently.  Now, form the mixture into crab cakes of about three and a half inches in diameter.  They should be three quarters of an inch thick.

Place each crab cake on a baking pan lined with paper and sprinkled with breadcrumbs.  Sprinkle bread crumbs over all of the crab cakes.  Chill the crab cakes for an hour.  Once chilled, melt the remaining butter over medium high heat and fry your crab cakes until they are golden brown.  This should only take about three minutes per side.

Serve your crab cakes warm with your choice of garnishes or side dishes.  The best complimentary flavors for fresh crab cakes are risotto or mash with fresh vegetables such as asparagus or broccoli.  Delicious!
