How to Rebuild Your Carburetor

If you want to save some money on your car repairs, you might want to do some of them on your own instead of paying big money for a professional auto repair man.  Replacing the carburetor can seem intimidating, but it is simple and inexpensive.  Here are some simple guidelines so you can get started.

Purchase a Carburetor Kit

The first thing that you will want to do is buy a carburetor rebuild kit from the manufacturer.  Choosing to buy a kit is easier because it will come with all of the parts you need for rebuilding your carburetor, and you don’t have to worry about buying the wrong thing.

Safety First

Whenever you are rebuilding a carburetor, or working on a similar project, you will want to make sure that you are in an area with plenty of ventilation.  Wear safety glasses and a mask at all times, and ensure that you have good lighting.

Consult the Diagram

Your carburetor kit should come with a diagram, which is going to be instrumental when you are rebuilding.  Make sure that you keep it handy.

Now that you have your kit and diagram, disconnect the accelerator pump, remove the cover and the choke, along with the choke linkages.  You can videotape yourself doing this, or write down the steps so that you can remember where everything is going to go when you start rebuilding the carburetor.

Clean the Parts

Clean each of the parts of the carburetor with a small brush and carburetor spray.  Now, you can reassemble the carburetor with the parts from your kit.  It can be difficult, but with a little patience and knowledge, you should be able to do it without too much trouble.  If you are in any doubt about your technical abilities, have a friend who knows about cars check the results over before you restart your car.
