Organizing Your Closet 5 Great Tips

If you need some basic closet organization ideas, you’ve come to the right place! To increase your space, try these 5 simple closet organization tips.

TIP 1: Clean out all of the old clutter that is hanging around taking up space. Look through your closets and get rid of anything you can’t or don’t use, and donate what you can to charity or sell it. If you can’t wear it, it shouldn’t be in your closet. This applies to surfboards, boxes of clutter, and big wedding hats you’ll never wear again!

TIP 2: Separate your winter and summer clothes, and store the ones you aren’t using somewhere else for great closet organization.

TIP 3: Look for alternative storage solutions like hooks, bins and shelving to increase your closet organization. Stacking bins are great as you can store your items vertically. These can be great because they give you more space while keeping items available.

TIP 4: Look for storage ideas that you can stash in different places that are easily accessible, but out of your way. These can be under the bed storage bins, storage trunks or chests that you can put in other places besides your closet. The more space you can create, the more closet organization you can accomplish.

TIP 5: Sort items hanging from your clothes rail into sections depending on what situation they are used for, to let you find what you’re looking for quicker. Put a marker in the form of a different colored coat hanger in between each section. For instance, at the start of your rail, hang all your work clothes (shirts, tops and pants). Next, have a section for all your ‘home’ clothes (tops, jeans). After that, fill up the rest of the space with all your ‘going out’ clothes (dresses, smart party outfits, fancy tops, smart pants). Make sure the clothes you use most often are toward the front (or most easily accessed) part of the rail.

When working on your closet organization, decide what works best for your personal needs. If you have a very small closet, some closet organization techniques will help but you still may be short on space. If you don’t have an attic or basement, you may need this space to store bulky bins. You may find that investing in a chest of drawers or armoire to expand your closet space works better for you.
