Will Movie Streaming Replace Mailed DVD Rentals?

It seems to happen every few years, especially in the last decade or two, when technology grows by leaps and bounds.  It happened in the world of music: in just a few decades, we went from records and eight-track tapes, to cassettes and CDs, and then on to MP3 downloads.

Now, almost everyone knows how to download songs or stream music.  This same revolution has also occurred in the world of movies and television, and is moving much faster than it did with the music industry.

There was definitely a time when watching a movie on VHS was the only option. Then DVDs came along, and changed everything.  The DVD movie rental has been the standard for many years now because DVDs have the ability to outlast VHS tapes, and also have a better picture and extra features.

In recent years, the DVD rental has become available through the mail with programs like Netflix. However, a new technology is threatening to take the place of the mailed DVD rental with the ability to stream movies and television shows online.

Now, brands like Apple iTunes, Hulu and Apple TV allow you to watch your favorite movies and shows online through an instant streaming program.  Because this offers instant access to thousands of programs, it has the convenience that you will not get if you have to wait for the mailed DVD rental for three days.

It is no surprise that the streamed rental will soon overtake the mailed disc DVD rental.  Since people like to be able to watch shows and movies when they want, this online streaming program offers instant gratification and ease of use that you just cannot find if you have to wait to watch your favorite sequel to Star Wars.
