How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

Most people take the time to make a New Year’s resolution or two every December 31st.  Quite a few of those people, who are certain that they are going to be able to stick to their resolution this time, end up failing and breaking it within a few weeks.  They often make the same resolution year after year, always promising that they will do better and stick to it.

The first thing to do when you are making your resolution and trying to stick to it is to be realistic.  You aren’t going to drop fifty pounds tomorrow or spend 7 hours in the gym each day, and you can’t bring your grades up in a week.  Take your resolution and slice it up into smaller, achievable chunks so that you can see results in less time.  When you add up all of those “pieces” in six months of next year, you will see that you’ve come close to, or exceeded, your expectations for your resolution.

Another tip is that you should also tell other people your resolution for accountability purposes.  This will ensure you have support, and a slap on the wrist if you begin to break your goal.

Keep at it, even if you find that you’ve fallen off the tracks.  You can reinstate your resolution on February 15 or July 2, or any time of the year if you need to.  The important thing is that you keep moving forward and have your goals in mind each day.  See your success in your mind, and continue to build it!
