How to Remove Snow From Your Roof

If you live in an area where it snows, you probably have a love/ hate relationship with it.  While it is beautiful and you can enjoy some fun winter activities, it can also be a pain and add inconvenience to your daily life.

Something that you can’t forget to do is remove the snow from your roof.  Snow is heavy, and when it sits on the roof, it can cause structural damage to your house, from cracking your tiles to putting strain on your roof support beams.  You also do not want to deal with water damage from when the snow melts, which can seep down inside and cause damage.

To remove snow from your roof, you first need to realize that this job can be very dangerous, and that you should never attempt to do it on your own.

A snow rake is a good way to get most of the snow off the roof.  It has a long handle and an aluminum end, and you can stand on the ground and use it to pull the snow from the roof.  You can get a snow rake at any good hardware store.  For a flat roof, you can go up and shovel, but always put down boards and be careful of your footing.

If you have a roof that is high and steeply slanted, then you might want to hire a professional to remove it for you if you don’t have a snow rake that reaches.  One of the good things about the roofs that have a steep slant is that the snow will often slide off on its own.  However, this can be dangerous to anyone who is standing below when this happens.  If the snow is already piling up, plan to remove it soon.
