Relationship Tips: How To Show Him You Love Him

I often say that us men are simple animals. We find pleasure in basic necessities like meat, alcohol, and sports.  Anything beyond that makes us ecstatic.  If you are in a new relationship with a man and want to build a stronger bond with him, or your long-tern relationship is in need of a little day-to-day oiling, here are some great tips to show him you love him. 

Love Him by (Trying to!) Love His Hobbies

Okay, so you may not love him enough to go fishing with him every Sunday for six hours, but more than likely your significant other will have a palatable hobby that you can join in.  By showing him that you enjoy the same things that he does, he will feel a much stronger bond with you.  He’ll never stop talking about the time you took him paint balling or beat him at darts at the pub.  Plus, this is a sure fire way to get his friends jealous of his wonderful girlfriend, who not only puts up with his weird hobbies (Dungeons and Dragons, anyone?) but also enjoys them with him from time to time.

Love Him by Surprising Him

Men are traditionally the ones who are supposed to give gifts or surprise their girlfriend with a romantic evening. Turn the tables by coming home with a special something for him.  Show him you love him by bringing home his favorite treat (more points if it’s something edible), or by getting a sexy new outfit that you can wear on a date. 

Even making a small gesture like renting his favorite DVD will show him how much you love him.  if you have no idea which is his favorite movie rental, get ‘Scarface‘, ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ or ‘300’ for instant ‘amazing girlfriend’ status.

Love Him by Turning the Tables

This tip is connected to the last one. Show him you love him by being the proactive one for once. Make reservations at a restaurant he enjoys. Tell him to meet you somewhere for a date night – but refuse to tell him where you’re taking him. Take control and switch roles for once. This tip extends into other parts of the relationship too. You’d be surprised how much he’ll enjoy your new found authority! 

Love Him By Taking Him to the Game

A good girlfriend is by her man’s side through tough times. A great girlfriend is by their man’s side in the stands of a stadium watching his favorite sports team – even though she may secretly be listening to an audio book on her iPod to get through the game without falling asleep. 

Show you love him by getting him tickets to Sunday’s game, and go with him.  Yes, really.  You can’t go wrong with the home team’s football game.  Every town in the United States has a football stadium within driving distance.  Even local roller hockey tournament would do – the fact that you are taking him to a competitive event is enough to show him you love him and will put up with anything just to be by his side.  If this tip sounds a little outdated, just think how you’d feel if your man went to a romantic movie with you, or showed up unannounced to watch you rehearse a play at your local theater without having to be dragged there.  Even though you secretly know he’s probably bored to tears, it’s the gesture that really counts.

Love Him by Agreeing with Him Every Once in a While

This tip may not work for all relationships, but I guarantee you, nothing will show your man you love him more than letting him be right – just once.  This tip is recommended in relationship counseling to defuse arguments when both sides of the fight reach a standoff, but you don’t need to be fighting or married to see the magic of just crossing your fingers behind your back and saying, ‘yes, dear’ every once in a while, rather than continuing an argument to the bitter end – which will usually end up with you both sleeping in separate bed for the night.

Instead of arguing with him when he answers a Jeopardy question wrong but insists Alex Trebek is incorrect, simply say, "Oh, you might be right".  The trick here is to be vague yet believable, not patronizing or sarcastic.  We men know in our hearts when we are wrong, we would just rather lie to ourselves and get into a fight with our nearest and dearest than admit it.  Yes, our egos are that big. 

Just one night of being right is enough to convince him you love him. I know, you probably don’t love him thaaat much, but try it just once and he will reciprocate by shaping up and giving you the benefit of the doubt next time you are wrong and insist you’re right.  But of course, that would never happen… would it?
