No matter the reason you are visiting New York City, there is one restaurant that you must hit while you’re in town – Katz’s Delicatessen. Founded in 1888, Katz’s has become one of the most defining restaurants in the city, and offers some of the best kosher-style meals around, as well as an enjoyable glimpse into the history of The Big Apple.
Katz’s is known for serving some of the best food in New York City, including their pastrami sandwiches and hot dogs. The restaurant is so popular that they go through 5,000 pounds of corned beef and 12,000 hot dogs in a single week.
Katz’s has been featured in numerous movies set in New York, including "When Harry Met Sally," as well as "Donnie Brasco" and "Enchanted." In addition to being a hit with the Hollywood set, Katz’s also has a long tradition of supporting American troops overseas. Their "send a salami to your boy in the army" has been an ongoing effort with the restaurant.
One notable difference between Katz’s and other restaurants is the ticketing method used. On entry to the restaurant, diners are given a numbered ticket on which a running total of the bill is kept. If a ticket is lost, a surcharge of $50 is assessed at the time of checkout. This is meant to discourage "losing" a ticket to get off cheaper.
