5 Fun Design Ideas For Your Homemade Mother’s Day Card

Kids love to make Mother’s Day cards from scratch, but it’s sometimes tough to come up with new ideas and materials to inspire them.  While there are many ready-made card templates online, you don’t have to follow an instruction manual to make a homemade Mother’s Day card.  Here are a few suggestions for getting started, and don’t worry, you already have all the items you need on hand at home.

1.  Everyone has paper plates in the cupboard, and kids love to use everyday objects in new ways for craft projects like this.  Simply fold a paper plate in half, and voila, you have the framework for a card.  Your child can decorate the plate as he or she sees fit.  the rounded shape makes it perfect to draw a flower on, with the corrugated outside of the plate becoming the petals.  Cut the bottom off so it stands up straight.

2.  In the springtime, it’s fun to incorporate objects from nature into a Mother’s Day card.  Find buds, blooms, feathers and colorful leaves from outside and glue them to paper stock to make a natural card. Find some wood shavings or use bark from trees along with a stronger wood glue to make a real art-deco piece!

3.  You’ve no doubt got a stash of unused buttons in your craft area, so put them to good use by making a floral-shaped design out of buttons.  Try making them into different designs, like heart shapes, flowers and even the initial of your mother’s name.  The resulting card will be 100 percent unique and something sweet to keep!

4.  Using simple pink ribbon, you can spell out the word “Mom” with the trimming.  Simply glue the ribbon words onto card stock, and write a sweet message inside.  If you have different ribbons left over, trim the card with them by gluing them on the outside of the card like a frame.

5.  Mom will love a Mother’s Day card with her child’s handprint.  It’s the perfect preservation of time and makes a fondly-remembered memento.  It’s easy to use washable paint, stamps, or watercolors for this kind of artwork.

These ideas are quick and easy, yet have far more sentiment than store-bought greeting cards.  You can easily make more than one to show just how much you truly love your mother.  And with store-bought greetings cards priced anywhere from $5-$10 for the more ornate, ‘handmade’ ones, you’ll be saving some money, too.
