How to Deal with Unemployment During the Holiday Season

Unemployment is never fun at any time of the year.  However, when you lose your job during the holidays, it can be even more stressful.  Not only are you out of a job, but you are without income during a time of the year when you need as much spending money as possible.

Still, there are some ways that you can handle unemployment during the holidays, and make the most of your situation.

One of the best options is to stop sending out your resume.  Yes, stop sending it out.  Now, take a look at that paper.  If you are dealing with unemployment, then you need to take a long, hard look at your resume and make sure that it is both up to date and compelling.  You might consider revamping your information to make yourself more employable.

Another way to cope with unemployment during the holidays is to actually stop looking for a job at all.  Take a vacation.  Most companies are not looking to add staff during this time of year anyway, so taking a brief break from submitting your resume and hoping for good results can give you a chance to recharge your batteries.

Most importantly of all, allow yourself to enjoy Christmas, instead of spending the whole time stressing about your lack of money and job.  Make sure others know about your situation so they won’t be expecting a big gift from you.

You can also deal with unemployment during this time of year by volunteering to help others.  While this will not put any additional cash in your pocket, it will certainly make you feel better by showing you just how many advantages you do still have.  Volunteer at a soup kitchen, at a toy drive or animal shelter or another charitable event.  You might even find that this is something that you want to continue even after you find a new job.
