Are You Taking Too Many Vitamins?

We all want to be healthier, and for many people this has led to an improved diet and exercise regimen.  For others, however, it has led to an over-dependency on vitamins and supplements to provide the body with the nourishment that it needs.

While there is certainly nothing wrong with taking vitamins to provide missing nutrients, as with anything in life, moderation is key.  Few people seem to realize that it is actually possible to take too many vitamins, or that there are actual health consequences in doing so.

While taking extra supplements every once in a while is good, it is important to make certain that your different vitamins do not share ingredients.  This can easily lead to an unhealthy overdose on otherwise healthy ingredients and vitamins.  An excess of vitamin C, for example, can cause mild cramps, diarrhea, and nausea.  The B vitamins, which are excessively present in energy bars and drinks as well as many vitamins, can cause nerve damage and other health issues when taken in excess in the long term.  With Vitamin A, high levels of the vitamin are stored in your bodily tissues rather than flushed away, as it is soluble in fat.  Over time, too much of the vitamin will cause vomiting, liver damage, blurred vision, and more.

Knowing when you have taken too many vitamins can be a hard thing to determine, especially because symptoms can present themselves long after you have swallowed the supplements – in some cases in years or decade’s time.  Looking out for strange symptoms on a daily basis is important, but the key is really in knowing what you are putting into your body.  This means not only reading labels and paying attention to every supplement, but allowing for what is in your natural diet as well.

When you pay careful attention to what you are putting into your body, you will find that vitamins can be safe and helpful – in moderation.
