Natural Remedies That Stop Diarrhea in Children

When you have children, their health is always your primary concern.  One of the most common ailments for little ones can be diarrhea. It can have many causes, and treatment is essential.  Left untreated, even a mild case of diarrhea can lead to dehydration, which can be extremely dangerous in very young or very sick babies.

When you want to ensure that your children are safe and healthy, you need to treat symptoms as soon as possible. Here are a few home remedies for common diarrhea.

One excellent home remedy for diarrhea is the BRAT diet.  This means offering only very bland and mild foods that are easy for the digestive system to handle, such as bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.  Children typically enjoy these foods and they naturally help to resolve diarrhea.

Adding fiber to your child’s diet can also be a great way to help bulk up bowel movements and stop diarrhea.  Whole grain foods or even such foods as pumpkin can add much needed fiber for your children so that the problem will soon cease.

Last, in order to help make diarrhea better, you need to treat the dehydration that it causes.  While sports drinks might seem like the best answer, you actually need to consider specific re-hydrating drinks or Popsicles for children.   These offer the salts and electrolytes that your children lose from diarrhea, and rehydrate your child faster than just drinking plain water.

These home remedies are excellent at alleviating diarrhea in children.  It is important to note, however, that if your child shows signs of a more severe illness, such as a high fever, unusually colored stool, rash, or vomiting, that it is important to call a doctor.  Diarrhea is usually harmless if treated promptly, but can indicate illness or viruses that need treatment.
