How to Plan a Budget Friendly Birthday Party for Your Child

Planning a birthday party for children can be a lot of fun, but it can also cost a lot of money. You can reduce the expense by following a few steps. 

First, themed parties are out because having a themed party (such as a Lion King party or a Jungle Book party) will involve you having to buy commercial decorations and costumes for your kids. Instead, have a ‘classic’ themed party such as a sleepover or a treasure hunt. Also consider a general costume party. It’s easier to make a generic pirate costume for your child without worrying that it’s not a proper ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ costume (complete with dreadlocks!)

A great way to reduce the cost associated with a birthday party for children is to set a budget early on and then stick to it. Planning ahead allows you to purchase such items as party ware, invitation and favors from some of the larger retail chains, party supply stores or even online, all of which can save you money.

Don’t overlook the 99 cent store or your local dollar store when buying party decorations – you can find plates, hats, paper chains and gift wrap at a dollar or less per item, saving you a bundle. You might also think about making your own invitations to invite other children to the party to help save money, as well.

A smart idea to reduce costs even further is to reduce the invitation list. Stop and consider whether your child really needs 30 or more kids at their party. Larger parties tend to be less fun for everyone involved, because you’ll spend all your time keeping the kids under control and you won’t have as much time to spend with your child. By carefully considering the invitation list and only inviting the children your child is really close to, you will save money and avoid a larger party than you really want to handle. The general rule of thumb is to invite the same number of children as your child’s age. 

Keeping these guidelines in mind can help to keep your party and your budget under control and will make the party much better both for your child, and for your wallet.
